High petrol prices and a weak United States economy have taken a toll on America's three biggest car manufacturers.

Ford sales dropped almost twenty-eight percent in June and the company blames it on high petrol prices and low consumer confidence. Toyota has reported a twenty-one percent decline, while General Motors says its sales dropped eighteen-and-a-half percent last month. The White House says that a period of slow growth for the US economy is making it difficult for the American car industry. But a spokesman says car makers are changing their fleets to try to respond to customer demand for smaller, more fuel efficient cars.
