India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit the Group of Eight summit in Japan next week where he is expected to push through a nuclear energy deal with the US.
The controversial nuclear accord, agreed in principle in 2005, would allow India to buy atomic power plants and technology despite not signing international non-proliferation pacts.
Left wing parties who prop up Mr Singh's government are not happy with the agreement, saying it would draw the traditionally non-aligned country too close to Washington.
But the Prime Minister's office says the deal would not compromise India's independent foreign policy or nuclear weapons programme.
