Afghan defence officials say at least 34 Taliban militants have been killed when they ambushed an army convoy in the country's south, while another 15 Taliban and seven police were killed elsewhere.
NATO says it will not enter Pakistan to hunt Taliban insurgents, but reserves the right to hit the militants there should they attack alliance troops across the border in Afghanistan.
Afghan president Hamid Karzai has vehemently rejected allegations that he has been obstructing counter-narcotics efforts and protecting drug lords.
The allegations were made by Thomas Schweich the U.S. government's former point man in the fight against the heroin trade in Afghanistan.
